American Indian College Fund Blanket - Journey

Designed by Belle Brings Plenty (Mnicoujou Lakota), a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, this blanket is both a tribute to her late brother Cole Brings Plenty and a reflection on the broader idea of a journey. Brings Plenty began by selecting the colours: in Lakota culture, red signifies being born, while blue signifies an honourable death. At the center, the dragonfly embodies healing medicine, while the stars along the top and bottom honour Brings Plenty and her five siblings. Above and below the dragonfly, dates, and Lakota words, written in script, speak to significant events for the Lakota people and her tiwáhe (family). The border’s boxed motifs are drawn from traditional Lakota beadwork and quillwork, a cherished art practiced by Brings Plenty’s mother.
Since 1995, Pendleton has been partnered with the American Indian College Fund. Sales of these blankets fund scholarships to tribal colleges and make a difference in the lives of students throughout the country. Royalties for each blanket sold go directly to provide scholarships for deserving students. Learn more at collegefund.org. Beginning in 2020, College Fund blanket designs have been selected through a national student competition.
